Fun facts about Alpacas

Fun facts about Alpacas

If there was a contest for the most popular, cute and loveable pet, Alpacas would win.

If there ever was a cute animal that conquered the hearts of people all over the world, it ought to be an alpaca. Alpacas were domesticated by the Incas more than 6000 years ago. They belong to the family of Camelidae, to which also belong Llamas, guanacos and vicunas from South America, and Bactrian and Dromedary camels from Asia and Africa.

So what do we know about Alpacas that makes them so lovable?

They are not so heavily build as Llamas, so luckily for them, they are not used to carry heavy loads like Llamas. Its good to be an Alpaca!

Since ancient times, they are valued for their lustrous, fine and silky fibre. Alpaca's fibre is stronger than cashmere, smoother than silk, softer than cotton, warmer than goose down, water repellent and flame resistant. Nowadays it is widely used for knitting, weaving, while in the ancient times it was exclusively available to noble, elite and royal descendants.

In addition, their fibre comes in 22 colours and hundreds of shades - ranging from rose grey to blue-black and all hues of white, beige and brown. There are a few shades of grey, though not 50. :-)

As if it is not enough, they are also known to be excellent therapeutic buddies. Owing to their sensitivity and intuition, softness and fluffiness, they are able to relieve the stress and make people feel more relaxed. Alpacas "therapeutic reputation" precedes them and they are widely used for this purpose in clinics, health care facilities and retirement homes.

What else makes these cute adorable pets so irresistible and loveable?

They are absolute sweethearts; they are very social and friendly. Alpacas can forge unusual friendships with people and other pets, such as cats, dogs etc.

Alpacas will never spit on people, unless they feel threatened or abused. In this case, no one has the right to blame them, right?

They might spit at each other in a ferocious fight for food, but this seems to be also a legit reason, right? What else? Last but not least, these are really leisure type of pets - they just love sunbathing and soaking up the sun.

It is then no wonder, that alpacas farms are becoming very popular all over the world. Playful and cheerful, Alpacas help to create moments to remember for visitors.

Did you already visit an alpaca farm? If not, find it in your region, country and visit it. It will be a day to remember! :-) Send us a photo or two with alpacas. :-)
